About Joe Peterson

I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you find the strength to start all over again. These words resonated with me when I first heard them in 2008. I’d been working in finance for most of my early 20s when unexpectedly the Credit Crisis flipped the whole economy on its head. That same year, my son was born. I found myself at a crossroads. Was the career I’d had up to that point the one I’d always wanted? If not, did I have the strength to start all over again? From an early age, I’d always loved the law. It provides the framework for every area of life and has the power to hold people captive or set them free. As a constantly evolving institution, I was fascinated by its ability to impact business and to transform people’s lives. I decided then that I wanted to reconnect with my forgotten love of the law and join the legal profession. So as a single father in my early 30s, I moved to Michigan and enrolled in law school. As a law student, I served the Detroit community by providing free legal services to indigent people in the areas of family and elder law as a board member of the student run Free Legal Aid Clinic. I also served as a law clerk for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. As an attorney, I’ve continued that work through the practice of business law and by continuing to volunteer in the community.I believe that the practice of law based on integrity and hard work combined with thoughtful community service are the pillars of a life to be proud of.
