I first started leading professionally when I was 25. I was a young, brash, ambitious and driven visionary. I loved being known for my ability to champion big ideas, lead exciting projects and accomplish audacious goals. I helped start a thriving global leadership organization and was regularly asked to speak to, mentor, consult with and train other leaders. I even worked as an assignment photographer in over 15 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe with social businesses and global organizations.I was doing fulfilling work, I had a great wife, cute kids, good friends and nice house. I had a great life and should have been happy, but I wasn’t. I didn’t know it then, but I was living and leading with a wrong mindset. I thought being a leader who got results and made an impact I meant I had to:Work all the time and always be availableSacrifice vacations, hobbies, sleep, exercise and time my family and friends Impress others with my big vision and great ideas Appear competent, intelligent, accomplished and always in controlHide my character flaws, bad habits, gaps and blindspots I tried to change for for many years, but no matter what I did I ended up right back where I started. What eventually helped me was moving to India with my and family to work as as a social entrepreneur. I was regularly sick, it was always hot, everything took so much longer to do. As if that wasn’t enough my family I were trying to learn a new language and figure out out how to thrive in the midst of cultural stress. No matter what I did, I felt angry, exhausted, impatient, confused, overwhelmed and disappointed. Finally, I reached out to a friend who was leadership coach. He started coaching me and immediately I began experiencing more personal clarity, margin and joy. My new found vision for a new way of living and leading gave me so much hope, joy and peace. Even before we finished our coaching series, I knew that I wanted to hep leaders the way he was helping me. Today, I am a professional coach focused on helping leaders transform their mindset so they can live and lead with greater clarity, joy and impact.
