I worked in the Quantum Engineering Group at MIT on a proposal to build a quantum gyroscope using NV centres in diamond. I designed and tested microwave and radio frequency resonators to apply large homogeneous magnetic fields to control the spin of an ensemble of nitrogen vacancy centres.

At CERN, I spent the summer constructing physical, electrical and chemical models of collisions of ions at a graphene membrane to show they would be of use in next-generation muon detectors. After completing this study we established a collaboration with UCL and I returned to carry out the initial transfer of graphene sheets into detectors.

In the Quantum Spin Dynamics group, I designed and built a laser controller to polarise spins of bismuth dopants in silicon. It controlled the wavelength and power of the laser using an Arduino and transistors. I carried out spin resonance on selenium donors in silicon and fitted an appropriate model to identify the sample. I designed a device to precisely rotate the sample using a microcontroller.

In the Diamond Electronics Group at UCL, I designed, synthesised, and characterised nanowires to use in the regeneration of neural tissue. I saw two orders of magnitude increase in conductivity on coating biodegradable polymers with graphene flakes.
