I have gained an excellent foundation for my future working life. My role involved managing a team in excess of 20 decorators, I liaised with decorators, site labourers, sales staff, site management, contracts managers, clerks of works, quantity surveyors, production directors, construction directors, managing directors and owners as well as other contractors, trades, reps and suppliers. My duties were varied, I prepared tenders for various contractors, attended pre-start meetings where we discussed Health and Safety, start dates, programmes, labour arrangements, specification. Once the job started I managed showhome/marketing suite decoration and openings to strict timescales, the day to day needs of the site including monitoring job progress, quality of work, snagging, ensuring sufficient materials were on site, managing customer service and aftercare in liaison with site managers, customer care, sales and purchasers. Meeting with site managers and agreeing with quantity surveyors the authorisation of dayworks and production payments after work was completed; to enable me to produce invoices at the end of the month. I had the responsibility of setting on additional labour and also, if work was slack or standards weren’t good enough, laying off decorators. Parkes Decorators have been in business for around 40 years and work for Barratt Homes, Bromford Housing, Cameron Homes, Jessup, Lioncourt Homes, Lovell, Mar City Homes, Persimmon Homes, RJK, Redrow Homes and Taylor Wimpey. My duties were varied, from loading compost and the like into customer’s vehicles to giving advice on plants, pricing goods, delivering to customer’s houses, customer service (dealing with customer enquiries, orders and complaints) and working on the tills. I was also involved in Sales Promotions (deciding how and where to display plants/gift items to get them noticed, etc.) I developed my communication and people skills further.
