Joseph Torsney Email and Phone Number
As a full stack software engineer at Lexical Labs, I am building data orchestration tools in Javascript and PostreSQL to enable the analysis of commercial contracts using Large Language Models (LLMs). In 2023, I was enrolled as a summer student at CERN, where I worked on the ALICE experiment as a full stack web developer. I delivered a major improvement, involving work on the full stack, on a web application used to keep track of the ALICE experiment’s operation and configuration.I helped develop and maintain the ReactJS application for Africa in Science (AiS). which is visited by over 2000 users monthly. AiS is a non profit organisation devoted to tracking and promoting scientific research in Africa. I created a unique data visualisation, the AiS Badge, now the organisations' flagship infographic.I recently completed my MComp Computer Science degree at The University of Sheffield, where I have gained a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of Computer Science. I am passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems and to advance scientific knowledge and discovery

The app also allows staff to communicate by writing 'Logs'. I implemented feature where users could link Logs to LHC Fills, an entity in the database. This involved adding a new table to the database to represent the many-to-many- relationship, adding API endpoints to support the creation of Logs with LHC Fills, displayed these on the front-end, and wrote integration tests. I am currently implementing a flexible data table component as an open source contributor. I published a report on my achievements during my placement which is available online the CERN document server. Show less -
Software DeveloperAfrica In Science Feb 2020 - Jul 2022I am responsible for developing and maintaining the ReactJS web-app for AiS. The app generates a page for each African country and I helped build the API that fetches information on scientific publications in the given country from the database. To display this data, I designed and created custom data visualisations using D3JS, such as the 'AiS Badge' which is used by the organisation as their flagship infographic. -

I was involved in all aspects of the software lifecycle, including sprint planning, development, unit/integration testing, code reviews, and gathering user feedback. I delivered several features to improve the user experience, including a feature where a tool that plots 3D data reacted to changes in the data elsewhere in the application. I did this by implementing an Observer pattern. I also fixed bugs related to concurrency and gained deep experience with python: the application interfaced with a C++ backend exposed to python, and extended matplotlib and numpy to bring custom functionality.
