Being a product designer at Cognizant Accelerator (Quick Left) means I am part of a product design team performing research and development for a fortune 200 company. We incubate new ideas in a creation/validation process called Launch Pad. It is similar to the process that has evolved at Google Ventures. We also take on existing products from within the company and help support them through Beta and beyond. My role as a senior product designer incorporated the following:• Facilitating discovery process for scientific lab management software • Creating workshops and activities that identify the problems needing to be solved • Using the Outcome Driven Innovation methodologies of Jobs To Be Done to isolate key jobs and outcomes• Advising stakeholders and investors on feature planning• Performing foundational research• Creating wireframes and assets to test hypotheses• Creating high-fidelity prototypes for user-testing• Writing stories for backlog in coordination with engineering• Implementing design system into all prototyping and feature designCognizant bought Quick Left in 2016 and made it their accelerator program so they could bring innovation and a proven methodology to their 250,000 employee company spanning major industries. My role as senior product designer within the accelerator is to establish the design thinking methodologies that shape the product roadmap. I support the development of our research methodologies that validate the business problem. I speak for the user's experience, develop wireframes and hi-fi designs for the products in our pipeline. I help to develop and maintain the Cognizant Accelerator's design system as it supports the wide range of Cognizant brands and products. I also develop on-going projects that are focused on our culture: I make posters for our weekly lunch-n-learn series, I bring in my photo gear and do head-shots for everyone, and I bring in home-brewed kombucha!

Exadel is a software engineering company that offers custom development services with R&D centers in North America and Eastern Europe. As a product designer, I helped form the design conversations and discovery phase for a large tollroad company that was creating software to track the cars on their road system. We conducted a suite of research including:• On-site research activities to watch how users performed their long list of jobs to be done• User interviews• Stakeholder interviews • User testingWe created a software tool that met the needs of both the business and the users. I also supported the creative team at Exadel in their Boulder office and supported their re-branding effort that encompassed 25 offices in 10 different countries around the world. I created photography to support their new identity in addition to key developments in their logo, on-site signage, and year-end reports.

Useagility hired me in early 2016 to support their effort to create a new UX training company, Pointworks Academy. We created a framework of information to help professionals and corporations advance their UX skills. Having kids has changed me. No question. When Andrea and I were expecting our first baby, we encountered an amazing amount of information, yet not all of it was useful. So we gathered everything we found to be good and made a childbirth prep class for dads. The idea caught on because there was such a dearth of information out there geared for the dads. The work I do with Empowered Papa has grown to also help childbirth professionals better support dads. I use my training as a therapist to teach counseling skills to be applied specifically for expectant parents. Here's what this looks like in my work: • I create and teach classes for new and expectant dads to champion their role in pregnancy, birth and postpartum • I teach a certification course called Dad Certified to birth professionals. The main focus of the class is learning counseling skills to help parents through the emotionally challenging time of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. • I create and present live radio shows, speak at conferences, and collaborate with industry leaders to advocate for gentle birth choices • I have a blog at empoweredpapa.com that has enough unique hits to match the population of a mid-sized American metropolis• Develop curriculum for childbirth education providers Example: I speak to doula organizations that are looking for continuing education to support their role in serving families in the birthing time. I speak about ways doulas can help dads become strong supports for their birthing partners.

This is where I cut my teeth in the counseling world. During my tenure as a therapist, I was fortunate to work under the wing of Dr. Kevin Wieland, who had been my mentor since high-school. I provided family and individual therapy to adults and children. Within Dr. Wieland's extensive network, I also performed full-scale psychological evaluations and report writing for ADHD, brain injury, dementia/Alzheimer's, personality, learning disability, and clinical functioning. My responsibilities included the following:• Administering and scoring tests for intelligence, personality, clinical functioning, and spectrum disorders• Writing psychological evaluations in coordination within the education and judicial systems• Coordinated billing with insurance companies• Presented assessment findings and recommendations • Providing individual and family therapy • Making presentations in the community and running workshops Example of work: A nine-year-old client came in for psychological testing as a referral from the public school system. I provided the psychological evaluation, created a treatment plan, and provided family and play therapy to achieve the desired outcomes. I coordinated with school staff and family members to support the client’s development.
