Demonstrated ability to guide innovative land protection solutions, foster collaborative efforts, and navigate complex federal and state processes. Adept public speaker, negotiator, and fundraiser, skilled in cultivating strong relationships with strategic partners from diverse backgrounds. As a fourth-generation Montanan and lifelong resident of Montana and Alberta, I am humbled by the privilege of being a fellow steward of wild landscapes on the traditional lands of the Apsáalooke Crow, Notameohmésêhese Cheyenne, Oceti Sakowin Sioux, Qlispe, Salish & Kootenai, Siksika Blackfeet, Shoshone, Bannock, Stoney-Nakoda, Assiniboine, Gros Ventre, Chippewa Cree, and numerous other indigenous peoples.Born in Big Timber, Montana, and raised at East Rosebud Lake in the Beartooth Mountains, I pursued freelance opportunities in the Canadian Rockies after graduating from the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada). In 1998, I returned to my homeland in Montana, where I have since been deeply involved in the outdoor industry and dedicated to conservation and access advocacy since 1998. My passion for adventure and nature led me to author my first guidebook on ice climbing in 1994, and I have since authored or published over a dozen maps and award-winning titles.

Since 2015 I have lead the Greater Yellowstone Coalition (GYC) campaign to stop two gold mines in Paradise Valley and next to Yellowstone National Park. As the lead strategist and campaign organizer we secured the following landmark successes:* June 2015: We intervened at MT DEQ to successfully delay a permit for major gold exploration that was due to be signed the following day;* November 2016: At the end of the Obama administration, we secured a 2-year mining ban on 30,370 acres of public land signed by Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell;* April 2017: Senior MT Senator Jon Tester introduces the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act to make the ban permanent;* October 2018: Following a two-year process with three public comment periods, a 20-year administrative mining ban was signed by Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke;* November 2018: Mt Rep. Gianforte introduces the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act into the House;* March 2019: The Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act is passed and and signed into law by President Trump;* 2016-2017: Wrote substantive comments that contributed in two exploration plans on the Yellowstone Boundary Mine being denied by the MT DEQ;* 2018-2019: Obtained two favorable rulings in the 6th District Court of Montana against MT DEQ, stopping the Lucky Minerals Emigrant Gulch exploration project;* December 2019: we received successful ruling by the MT Supreme Court declaring the legislative amendments to the Montana Mining and Reclamation Act, in this case, violate Montanans right to a clean and helpful environment under the 1972 MT Constitution, vacating a permit to explore for gold in Emigrant Gulch in Paradise Valley;Recent Media: https://bit.ly/3vGA5mE

    Director & Board President
Bozeman Ice Climbing Festival Apr 2006 - Aug 2022
    Bozeman, Montana, United States
As Director of the Bozeman Ice Festival I was able to shepherd the event through no less than four organizational changes and public land permitting challenges (due to numbers and climate change). During my tenure we led the industry in pioneering numerous inclusion and diversity clinics, organized the first Olympic-caliber World Cup events in North America, and created one of the largest events of its kind in the world. As a volunteer Director I oversaw all operational and financial aspects growing from a 2-day event planned by a loose association of like-minded businesses into a week long celebration, dozens of paid event staff with a $175,000 annual budget. Direct and significant outcomes of this work are evident throughout Hyalite Canyon with winter access for over 30,000 people a month; through infrastructure support at the iconic Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture in downtown Bozeman; at numerous local retailers; and, nationwide among a growing number of ice festivals and diversity programs in the winter ice climbing industry.
