Walking Tree Travel is an experiential travel company geared toward providing highschool students the opportunity to explore different cultures and places while learning about topics related to conservation, community service, and cultural exchange. As a program lead, I join the participants on the trips (to date I have gone to Costa Rica, Ecuador, Galapagos Isands, and Cuba) and am the primary point-person between them, the local vendors, the program's logistics, and with Walking Tree Travel headquarters.From a technical perspective, I am charged with managing expenses, day-to-day program logistics, and the health and safety of all participants. More broadly, I am also tasked with establishing and fostering the group and program "dynamic" through open and compassionate communication with the participants throughout the trip. The role of Program Lead is as much a travel guide as it is individual and group mentor. I spend time during trips to communicate with individuals, small groups, and the entire program about the challenges often faced, personal-growth often achieved, and the successes obtained in travel, in cultural exchange, and in the development of cultural competence.
