Professor-Emeritus Industrial DesignTu Delft Jun 2019 - PresentFaculty Industrial Design Engineering, Landbergstraat 15, 2628Ce Delft -
Full Professor And Chair Mechatronic Design, Faculty Industrial Design EngineeringTu Delft Dec 2008 - Jun 2019DelftMechatronics, Robotics, Smart products, Additive Manufacturing, 3D-printing, Reliabilityhttp://www.io.tudelft.nl/over-de-faculteit/afdelingen/design-engineering/research-areas/mechatronics/Vision: Regain local product manufacturing.Mass production of products has shifted towards countries with lower labor cost. This has damaged western Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) as supplier. Goal: Integration of Robotics and Additive Manufacturing to make a big step in workforce/labor productivity. Current robotics heavily relies on elaborated models of a static environment and on human configuration and supervision. Therefore robots lack the ability to smoothly adapt to changing situations. They must be tailored to the specific environment to suit changes in both the environments and the applications. These limitations make the existing systems unfriendly for human cooperation and costly to deploy and maintain in real world applications.By combining Robotics and Additive Manufacturing (AM) we set a new goal: Decentralized Customized Manufacturing on Demand.Robotics.We need a new generation of ‘robots that work’: the next generation of industrial robots. These robots are expected to be flexibly deployable, to receive work instructions from non-specialist employees, and to operate safely side-by-side with humans. ‘Robots that work’ will be team players instead of unsafe, intrusive and complex machines.See: ‘Factory in a Day’; http://www.factory-in-a-day.eu/ and the Delft Robotics Institute: http://robotics.tudelft.nl/Additive Manufacturing.AM processes fabricate products directly from digital 3D model data. AM offers unprecedented possibilities in shape complexity, graded materials, less material use and custom geometries. it is possible to use AM for one-off products because AM machines are modules in a digital workflow. The added value of our research is focussed on the flexibility in the design of the product. See: http://www.io.tudelft.nl/?id=98394 -
Theme Leader 'Robots That Work'Technische Universiteit Delft Dec 2010 - May 2019Robotics Institute - Robotics.Tudelft.NlTU Delft Robotics Institute unites all the university’s research in the field of robotics. Its main challenge is to get robots and humans to work together effectively in unstructured environments, and real settings. Within the institute both the ‘hard’ robot disciplines (mechatronics, embedded systems, control and AI) and the ‘soft’ robot sciences (human-machine interaction, user interaction, architecture, ethics and design) have a prominent presence. By joining forces, and aligning research, education and valorisation, TU Delft Robotics Institute takes a leading role in the creation of the next generation robotics. To get a complete overview of the developments in the field of robotics - and the institute’s vision on these developments - download the position paper to read more.http://www.robotics.tudelft.nl/?q=content/research-themes-projects -
Head Of The Section Reliability And Durability In The Design Engineering DepartmentTu Delft Mar 2012 - Jul 2015Landbergstraat 15, 2628 Ce, DelftThe Design Engineering department focuses on education and research of the construction and technical aspects that play a role in the development and design of products. The research activities in the section Reliability and Durability are aimed at increasing the effectiveness of Embodiment Design by facilitating improved technology selection methodologies, research on emerging materials, as well as by developing design rules for products in order to improve functionally, and reliability and durability during service. -

The aim is to exchange networks, ideas and experiences and, where possible, put Limburg on the map within the (inter) national field of product design. The objectives of the LDA are:• Realization and promotion of networks between the members of the association.• Promotion of product design in the province of Limburg and the Euregion.• Discussion partner and a sounding board with regard to design in Limburg.• Informing SMEs about design.Website: http://www.lda.nl -
Historical Research And Exposition DesignOcé Museum Sep 2018 - PresentSt.
Zeker nu "Technology is becoming more than a dumb tool to enhance human life. Technology nestles in people, between people, has knowledge about people and can step by step act as people." Website: https://mmi-platform.net

Senior Principal ScientistOcé Aug 2013 - Aug 2017Van Der Grintenstraat 1, 5914 Hh, VenloResearch 1: 3D imaging and printing of Fine Arts.Paintings are near-planar objects with material characteristics that vary widely. The fact that paint has a material presence is often overlooked, mostly because we often encounter these artworks in the form of two-dimensional reproductions. Capturing paintings in the third dimension is not only important for study, restoration and conservation, but it also inspires 3D printing methods, particularly through the high demands it makes on reproducing color, gloss and texture. The scanned topographical map and color data are used to make hardcopy 3D reproductions, using a specially developed printing system. Several paintings by Dutch masters Rembrandt and Van Gogh have been scanned and reproduced using this technique.See: http://www.io.tudelft.nl/onderzoek/delft-design-labs/foundational-labs/3d-fine-art-reproduction/Research 2: Freeform ManufacturingIn this project we use a robotic arm and an off-the-shelf printhead. The key challenge is to generate an adaptive printing strategy, depending on:real-time scanned surface, intended material composition, printhead resolution/width and robot speed/controlSee: http://www.io.tudelft.nl/onderzoek/delft-design-labs/foundational-labs/freeform-manufacturing/ -
