Joh Jarvis is the Executive Director and Founder of The Light Inside, an organisation established to take meditation training to corrections facilities across the US and eventually Australia. In early 2020, Joh set up a Meditation program for men in maximum security in Rikers Island jail, New York City. The training grew after the Covid-19 pandemic and now more than 100 men have the skills to be self sufficient meditators after sitting the four-class course. The program at Rikers Island continues in the George R. Vierno Centre. And there are plans to begin teaching the island’s Correction Officers and staff. In 2024, The Light Inside trained more than 100 incarcerated residents, staff, and Corrections Officers at North Dakota’s State Penitentiary and Heart River (women’s) Correctional Centre. The Light Inside is also working with our Board member and Founder of Philadelphia’s Why Not Prosper, Reverend Michelle Simmons, to lead meditation training for incarcerated women in the greater Philadelphia area. Before moving to the US, Joh was a leading media professional/journalist in Sydney, Australia. She was a journalist and held a number of senior management and editorial roles at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation from 1993-2015. She led large change projects for major radio and digital networks such as ABC Local Radio, and ABC NewsRadio. And she guided teams of producers, journalists and audio engineers across multiple media platforms.
