Johan is a specialist advocate in building and engineering construction, technical and commercial disputes who practises as a dual member of the Johannesburg and Cape Town Bars at Maisels Group in Johannesburg and 56 Keerom Chambers in Cape Town.He has extensive experience of local and international standard form building and engineering contracts and of domestic and international arbitration, adjudication and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.He has been instructed to advise or represent international and domestic contractors, employers and consultants in a wide variety of engineering and construction disputes arising from projects in South Africa, the United Kingdom, South America, the Middle East, Namibia, Kenya, Botswana, Lesotho and Zambia. He has specific experience of a diverse range of engineering projects, including marine breakwater and quarrying projects, a large variety of energy projects - coal and gas power stations as well as solar, wind and hydro-electrical projects - TBM-tunnels, processing plants, roads, bridges and silos. His experience in building projects is equally diverse, ranging from complex international convention centres to hotels, luxury holiday homes and bespoke timber frame lodges off the coast of Africa. He has extensive experience in commercial disputes, including professional negligence, mining, information technology, joint venture, insurance, security and guarantee disputes.He holds an MSc degree in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution from Kings College London and BA and LLB degrees from the University of Stellenbosch.He is a co-author of Charrett (ed), The International Application of FIDIC Contracts, Routledge, 2019, and has authored a number of papers in the field of construction and engineering law and dispute resolution. He is regularly invited to speak at international and local construction law conferences and to teach at workshops.He has held acting positions as High Court judge and magistrate in the Magistrate’s Court, as well as appointments as appeal arbitrator, arbitrator in international and domestic disputes, legal expert and adjudicator. He is on the construction panel of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa and is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Botswana Institute of Arbitrators.He is a co-founder and present chairperson of the Society of Construction Law for Africa (2013-2020).
