I started at Saldanha Steel on the 3rd January1996 as an apprentice. I completed my apprenticeship in 1997 and continued on to obtain my millwright trade test. I was appointed at Saldanha Works on the 1st Janaury1998. Since then I have made it my duty to excel in my trade as well as to learn all I can on the production and engineering side. Due to this attitude and no foreseeable career advancement opportunities I applied for a production supervisor position in 2000 and was awarded the position. In 2006 the company decided to implement shift maintenance specialists, creating an opportunity for me to advance my studies as it was decided that supervisors could become technicians. I saw this as an opportunity to improve myself. I enrolled for the course in 2015 at CPUT.Whilst performing my duties as a supervisor, I started with the millwright to technician conversion program. CPUT sent a lecturer every Monday and Wednesday, during the semester, to give us classes. For me this meant that I had to attend on my off days and the days that I worked night shift. This was not a problem for me, as it was an opportunity I got and I was grateful for it. During my time of studies, I worked with the engineering team, to gain practical experience. Since the last quarter of 2019 I was granted the opportunity to work full time with the engineering team. My duties included; improvement projects, plant maintenance, fault finding, shutdown planning, electrical drawings, PLC programming, abiding to safety procedures and doing standby.
