Business Strategy And Strategic Alliance ManagerHp Aug 2012 - Sep 2017Palo Alto, CaAs a strategic alliance manager at HP Inc I am looking at the long-term compute strategy for our Personal Systems unit (PC’s and devices), how mobility and cloud is accelerating the “one life” and “connected era” and how your smartphone has now become your personal hub, not the PC. Apps and services are at the center of your “one life” and can be accessed by a multitude of devices and appliances like your phone or Alexa, by using input devices, gestures, voice or even your eyes. Where does that leave the PC OEMs like HP, and what choice points do we have?As mobile device shipments are about to outnumber PCs by 5:1, the innovation in the hardware ecosystem has moved from the PC to mobile. The PC OEM’s are no longer the largest customers of memory, displays and sensors. What are the implications for OEMs like HP?Alongside the compute strategy I also manage our strategic alliances with AMD, Qualcomm and ARM Holdings. I manage the overall relationship to ensure that we are engaged and aligned on an executive, technical, commercial and transactional level, from CEO level to R&D. This involves negotiating master purchase agreements, as well as pricing and rebate negotiations for individual components with annual volumes in excess of $1B.A key part of managing the AMD relationship is to define and implement a strategy to balance the partner ecosystem without alienating any one partner. Objective is to maintain AMD share of the business at a healthy level as a counterweight to Intel’s dominance. If Intel becomes a single source, all profits for the PC OEMs will go to Intel and Microsoft, and the OEMs will race to the bottom on cost. -
