About Johan Berntsson

I've been programming since 1983, and I'm interested in software design and development, distributed computing, and machine learning. I'm looking to explore new programming languages and technologies, and applying advanced technology concepts in novel application areas. Some of my work is publicly available on my github page: https://github.com/johanberntssonMy educational background is a PhD degree in Computer Science at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia 2002 - 2006, and a M.Sc degree in Computer Science and Technology at Linkoping University, Sweden 1989 - 1994. My main research interests have been optimization problems using evolutionary computation and other soft computing techniques.I have developed nuclear power simulation software and hardware in Sweden, Germany, Russia, and Japan for GSE Power Systems AB 1994-2002, and again from 2010. In 1995 - 2002 I was the resident representative of GSE Power Systems AB in Tokyo, Japan. I have also contributed to open source, as a core developer on the OpenSim project, where I worked on scaling of virtual worlds, and on ScienceSim, where I created scientific data visualizations in virtual environments.Specialties: software engineering, distributed computing, research, project management, end customer support

Listed skills include Software Engineering, Distributed Systems, Software Development, Programming, and 34 others.

Senior Systems Engineer

Current

Tokyo, Japan

I am currently working in several full-scope simulator project for nuclear power plants at GSE Systems. GSE Systems is an American/Swedish developer of simulators for power and process industry, with large-scale projects all over the world. My main work has been with nuclear simulators, which are process intensive applications, each installation consisting of a cluster of workstations. A large number of concurrent processes are needed to exchange information, share resources and guarantee performance. My main activities in these projects have been development of a process plant computer system, including data visualizations of the reactor core and primary systems, an IO system for the hardware panels in the control room (> 10,000 IO points), and integration of various software codes for reactor core simulation, accident management algorithms, control and logic, and thermohydraulics.

Apr 2010 - Present

Business Owner & It Consultant

Brainplus Llc

Tokyo, Japan

In this period I did IT consulting work, mainly for clients in the nuclear industry in Japan. The work includes research, software development and user training courses. I was also involved in customer negotiations and system specification work for two full-scale nuclear simulator projects in Japan.

May 2006 - Apr 2011

Senior Systems Engineer, Technical Lead

3Di Inc

Tokyo, Japan

I was as a technical lead and senior systems engineer at 3Di, a part of the NGI group in Tokyo, Japan. 3Di creates virtual worlds similar to Second Life, using the open source project OpenSim (http://opensimulator.org). I was a core developer on OpenSim, as well as the technical lead for the development group at 3Di, designing and directing the work on various server improvements, resulting in new modules for dynamic load balancing, data mining, andperformance improvements. In addition, I was also a senate member of ScienceSim (http://www.sciencesim.com), and developed software for visualizing scientific data in virtual worlds.

Nov 2007 - Jun 2010

Phd Student

Brisbane, Australia

My PhD project enables non-experts to create distributed genetic algorithms (DGA) that work efficiently in a dynamic grid-computing environment. The DGA is implemented in a cycle-stealing peer-to-peer architecture, and uses on-line performance monitoring and adaptation to automatically adjust its parameters in order to ensure efficiency and robustness. Research questions included developing methods to collect relevant data and strategies for adaptive load balancing and routing. The system was validated in simulations and in large-scale scalability tests on a computer cluster using a NP-hard VLSI floorplanning application.

2002 - 2006 ~4 yrs

Visiting Researcher

Ibm

Almaden, San Jose, Usa

I did an academic exchange program at IBM Research Center in Almaden, Silicon Valley, designing and implementing a massive grid-based solution for generating synthetic electronic health records, as part of a wider IBM initiative in research on IT-solutions for the health care industry. The system successfully simulated 50 million agents on a 70 computer cluster.

Feb 2005 - May 2005

Senior Systems Engineer

Gse Power Systems

Tokyo, Japan

I was the resident representative of GSE in Japan 1995-2002. I was mainly working with cluster design and development to create simulator software that work efficiently in a cluster computing environment, but I was also involved in R&D, programming, I/O system design, and customer support.Main activities:· 2001: Supervised a European Union funded simulator upgrade project in Smolensk, Russia. My role was to monitor progress and provide expert advice to local engineers. The project was successfully concluded in late 2001.· 2000: Prepared a report on future simulator designs for TEPCO, Japan.· 1999: Presented a I/O system paper at the SimWorld conference in Kyoto, Japan.· 1998: Project manager for new I/O system implementation, based on Echelon LON technology. Spent one month working with our subcontractor in Paderborn, Germany. The system was successfully introduced on three full-scale simulator projects in Japan 1998-2000.· 1996: R&D project on creating nuclear control room simulations using VR technology resulted in a working prototype system, suitable for classroom use.· 1995: Relocated to Japan.· 1994: Worked mainly with design and optimization of database support for simulator process computers, and I/O system design.

Apr 1994 - Nov 2002

Intern

Linkoping, Sweden

While writing my M.Sc dissertation I worked on optimization problems in curing of composite plastics, used in the hull of jet fighters. I created an expert system using case-based reasoning to solve the problem.
