Johann Grech was born in Attard, Malta in 1979, son of a Gozitan family. Raised in Gozo and educated in the United Kingdom and the United States, Johann holds an MSc in Corporate Communications and Public Affairs. With over two decades of experience in brand development, strategic marketing and political campaigning, Grech honed his skills in the freelance market, the ad agency business and the public sector. Between 2013 and 2017, he led the Government's marketing team at the Office of the Prime Minister. Since 2018, as Malta Film Commissioner, he has brought bold changes to Malta's film industry. Being the architect behind Malta's new cash rebate programme, he has bolstered the financial incentives to put Malta on the global map of countries offering one the most promising cash rebate. Under his administration, the local crew base was strengthened and consolidated. He is also focusing on re-building the Malta Film Studios based on his vision of creating a world-class film industry in Malta. The recently launched Mediterrane Film Festival has been another brainchild of Grech to attract more film business to the Maltese Islands.
