Johann Siau is the Global Research and Development Manager for Orlight and Orcomm Ltd. He is responsible for overseeing and to lead various R&D projects, ensure adherence to organisational policies and procedures, design controls, and to lead process optimisation projects whilst focusing on product quality and production efficiency within the company, and manufacturing sites in conjunction with shareholders. He will also develop strong collaborative relationships with other inter and intra-departmental groups, and promote an environment of knowledge sharing.He was a Principal Lecturer in Digital Communication System and the founder and research team leader for the Smart Systems Laboratory and research team at the University of Hertfordshire. He continues his role at the University as a Visiting Industrial Fellow for the School of Engineering and Technology.He is an electrical and electronics engineer and his expertise and interest area includes embedded systems, smart systems, system integration, distributed systems, networks and IT security and cloud based services. His main research and development interests are in the application areas of smart systems in support of service delivery, focusing on the design and integration of sensors, electronics and embedded systems through to the integration and formulation of service aggregation platforms. Over the past years, he was involved and delivered on TSB funded projects, research, development and innovation, commercial and knowledge transfer work. His research and development interests is in the intelligence of smart systems focusing on the applied and cross-disciplinary nature incorporating smart homes/building management systems, assisted living technologies, and vehicular communications.The Smart Systems Laboratory provides a rich and stimulating environment for R&D in smart devices, systems and services which rapidly enables ideas to be taken from conception to proof of concept and beyond.
