About Johan Van Rooij
I love using math and algorithms to solve practical real world problems. I strongly believe that solving real-world problems requires not only the math and programming skills often advertised for data scientists, but also an in depth understanding of the real-world processes you are optimising. Having real impact requires involving the right people, using the right architectures and best practices, and often being able to explain any model in simple terms to the people that use it.Besides my work at Valcon, I am an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University. Here, I have my Master’s course on algorithm theory, I coach students that do their Master thesis projects, and I teach classes on how to tackle real world problems.In 2018, I was part of the team that won the 'Hendrik Lorenz Nederlandse Data Science Prijs' for most innovative Data Science application in The Netherlands. In 2023, I won the 'EATCS Nerode Prize' for fundamental milestones in the field of parameterized algorithms.Expertise: algorithms, data science, operations research, machine learning, deep learning, data science, teaching, applied mathematics, analytics, python, C#, c++.
