Landscaping for Genevieve Schmidt requires great communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in all elements. This position requires me to be on my feet all day performing many duties; weeding, raking, deadheading, pruning, planting, fertilizing, and shoveling. I communicate with clients to make sure I understand their goals for their yards and gardens. This allows me to efficiently complete maintenance and relay other information to my supervisor.

• Spending a season interning for SPI exposed me to the vast range of responsibilities of a forester. Much of my time was spent laying our units for harvesting, i.e. flagging boundaries, property lines, habitat retention areas, stream zones, and wildlife trees. I also marked trees for sales under several different prescriptions; sanitation and salvage, commercial thinning, shelterwood removal, and fuel break. I assisted during reforestation making sure seedlings were being planted correctly and met stocking requirements. I was also exposed to administration; working with loggers and other contractors so that jobs were completed efficiently and correctly. Other work included clearing roads of fallen trees and debris, yardwork around the main office, and assisting with wildlife and botany surveys.

Working on the Schatz Tree Farm included a wide range of duties. I worked with another employee clearing roads of storm debris and fire hazards. The majority of our time was spent taking inventory of tenth-acre permanent plots, found by navigation with compass and map, and measured tree DBH, height, species identification, canopy class, tree vigor, and mapping their locations. I also assisted researchers with a mammal survey and a road assessment of the tree farm.
