I have known John Baar since Fall of 1989. For the first four years John was my ever-patient teacher and mentor in not only the craft of education information technology, but also the art of training students and faculty in the successful use of technology. I first met John Baar while taking a computer graphics course at Glenbrook South during the fall of my freshman year. John was the Computer Coordinator for Glenbrook South at the time. Within the first two weeks of the semester John became my official teacher of record for Lab Assistance during all my free periods. Being the late 1980’s integrated technology learning was at its toddler stage at Glenbrook South. Much of the groundbreaking work was done in the mid 1980’s by John’s former immediate supervisor and my former math teacher and textbook author, Dr. McConnell. It was during these times that I learned from John the key personality traits necessary to successfully bridge gaps with highly successful and seasoned faculty members, as well as students. John taught me the importance of empowering the end-user by listening and making them feel safe, as well as important. In addition to these activities John also took the time to train me in the craft of being a computer technician, and the intricacies of Apples ASIP server software. After college I returned to Glenbrook South as a computer technician. The birth of the Internet age led to a complete change at Glenbrook South. The amount of computer labs tripled. With the increase of technology John’s position was re-imaged into a more technical support role. It was a pleasure once again to work with John in the configuration and support of Glenbrook South’s 600 Macintosh and 600 windows computers. As Apple Certified Desktop/Portable Technicians, John and worked very hard in the creation, testing, repair and successful implementation of Macintosh computers and peripherals. One highlight of our time at Glenbrook South was the successful implementation of five wireless iBook carts with fifteen laptops each into the daily curriculum of almost every department. Even know John and I collaborate and utilize our friends and colleagues at other school districts to work on MAC OS X Server issues, audiovisual equipped classrooms, image creation, and my district’s up-coming one-to-one iBook program. I believe John’s employment history, experience, and formal certifications in both education and technology would be an asset to your organization.
