My career has covered civil and building engineering design, and project management, of major infrastructure projects globally. Since 1997 I have focussed on design leadership of multi-disciplinary teams for transport, subway and rail projects, all in complex urban environments. The projects include tunnels and stations in seven countries. After training as a civil and structural engineer in the 1970's, I founded a business for consultant designers Arup in Tokyo in 1990, and carried out cutting edge seismic design structural engineering projects for seven years before handing over to my successors Arata Oguri and colleagues who have built up Arup Tokyo into a leading design firm in Tokyo, and the only major foreign engineering designers active in the domestic market in Japan. I have also played a leading role in the start up and operation of design office businesses for Arup in Toronto and Copenhagen. I am now working in Arup London office, in the Transport Infrastructure Group. Our design work on the Riyadh metro project is complete and trains are running. I have been full time working on the High Speed Rail project HS2 in the UK since 2018, working in a design joint venture of Arup-Typsa-Zublin Technical for the Skanska-Costain-Strabag contractor JV, as the design team technical lead. Our scope covers tunnels, shafts and underground structures for the south section of the UK's largest civil engineering project. The TBM machines are moving forward and so is the entire project. It is exciting to be part of it.Ever since working for a design and build contractor in the 1980's I have retained a strong interest in cost-effective design and innovation opportunities. Now I am seeking to apply that experience on HS2 and more broadly and save money, save carbon and increase efficiency of civil engineering design processes.

Office Manager / DirectorOve Arup And Partners Japan Limited Apr 1987 - Aug 1997Tokyo, JapanI was assigned to learn spoken and written Japanese, and to create opportunities for Arup in Japan and with Japanese major clients and construction industry collaborators. After completing studies, Arup Japan was set up in 1990 and I led the office and the firm's work on projects in Japan, focussed on structural engineering and building engineering design for major buildings. This was a unique opportunity and challenge to set up and grow a business in an unfamiliar location, and in a market with no recognition of Arup and no major foreign competitors. Arup Japan has now celebrated over 25 years of operations and the engineers we recruited and trained are continuing to play leading roles in the firms' development as a respected player in the building engineering design market in Japan.
