About John Beach
Mr. Beach has over 35 years experience in engineering. He supported installation of communications systems in missile silos, then moved into aerospace design, including layout and design of satellite propellant tanks. This lead to a new career in cryogenics, where he designed helium dewars, heat exchangers, lines and vacuum insulated equipment. He refined his vacuum skills as a Vacuum Engineer for an advanced accelerator. He gave presentations to outside organizations to explain the function and progress of the accelerator. He moved on to R&D of high power microwave systems. He prepared overall layouts of high power microwave systems and designed thermal control systems with a heat rejection rates of over 150 kW. The thermal control required testing under vacuum; the test sample survived up to a flux of 9500 Watts/cm2. His thermal design skills were solicited to design a box to hang on the exterior of a helicopter. The carbon/fiberglass/honeycomb box provided a thermal and humidity controlled, vibration isolated environment to protect sensing and data collection equipment during flight. Mr. Beach performed all the thermal, vibration and structural analysis, as well as the detailed design. He has also worked on a heavy rotating and tilting platform, explosive pulsed power design and fabrication, and conceptual design of mobile high power microwave systems. His recent experience includes the development of electronic packages for rockets and payloads. The work included design with GD&T, dynamic structural analysis using Steinberg's criteria, thermal analysis, random vibration and shock testing. Mr. Beach has worked in very formal design engineering environments and in small, successful organizations that embraced practices that ensured requirements analysis, design verification and validation. He obtained a Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering from the AFIT. For this he completed four quarter-courses and a systems engineering project.
