A Far North Queenslander, I have more than 30 years of geotechnical engineering and hydrogeological experience, this gained in a range of climatic, environmental, economic, and cultural settings across Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States. I managed relatively small, technically-focussed teams for much of this time.Currently, I lead a terrific team comprising hydrogeologists, geotechnical engineers, and tailings, radiation management, remediation, and rehabilitation specialists from Iluka’s head office in Perth. Iluka’s Corporate Technical Services Department is an outcome of a personnel planning strategy I developed soon after being appointed Manager. Progressively implemented over several years with support from Iluka’s Human Resources professionals, the strategy seeks to identify good people who, depending on requirements, are able to work independently or complement their peers, offer diversity of thought, take considered risks, deliver with integrity, and improve themselves and those around them. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in support of securing or maintaining Chartered status with a relevant professional organisation is a requirement that is sponsored by Iluka at least in part.Under my guidance, the team has focussed on:* developing management systems, procedures, or workflows to support Iluka’s operational teams, with tailings and radiation management aspects receiving particular attention in recent years;* geotechnical data collection and management;* providing fit-for-purpose earth science and geo-engineering support to a range of technically-complex studies, projects, and operations; and* delivering cost-effective and practical design recommendations and management advice for all phases in the project lifecycle, including rehabilitation and closure.
