Eight years experience leading teams performing carbon footprints and LCAs (and seeking reductions) for the oil and gas, alternative energy, food and beverage, manufacturing and chemical sectors, including: - Led a comprehensive LCA of used oil management alternatives- Developed and implemented a Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program in China - Avoided valuable metals hazardous waste landfilling by qualifying a metals reclaimer for a variance to the definition of solid waste (CapEx and operating savings > $1 MM)- Performed an energy study to identify by field measurement contributors to a major manufacturing facility's footprint (surprisingly one machine type was 33% of the total)- Developed 11 beverage carbon footprints that were certified by the Carbon Trust- Performed a comprehensive carbon footprint of an integrated oil company's oil extraction, transportation and refining operations- Calculated 50 before and after carbon footprint reduction estimates to help a company formulate its project priorities (energy study, supply change enhancement, packaging alternatives, recycling options, etc.)- Performed a waste minimization study for a refinery that identified > $1 MM in cost savings and carbon footprint reduction opportunities- Served as a critical reviewer for an LCA paper on oil shale extraction being considered for publication in a technical journalI also performed regulatory compliance audits, and helped clients address their compliance assurance needs through the development of tactical solutions.

My time at ERM has included 11 years as a partner (2000-2011). I have been responsible for a number of facility RCRA permit renewals and Title V permit applications for refineries and chemical plants, as well as for the development and review of Benzene Waste NESHAP (BWON) compliance programs for more than a dozen facilities.Key elements of this part of my career included a unique applicability documentation process using a custom database, and emphasis on strategy-based development of practical compliance checks. Elements of the process and the database have been used by dozens of clients globally to support permitting, audits, responses to agency enforcement and program development.I also led facility-level efforts to comply with new regulations, performed facility audits, conducted internal and external regulatory training and assisted with regulatory report development.

As regional manager I was responsible for operations in 14 states including idled mining facilities, radioactive clean-up sites, EPA Superfund sites, and remediation at operating assets. In the context of this assignment I also led the development and commercial management of an environmental test laboratory, a venture to fabricate remediation equipment, and a third-party risk assessment review team.

Responsible for overseeing all health, safety and environmental activities for a terminal that was recently converted from an operating refinery that was shutdown. Oversaw the environmental and safety aspects of refinery demolition and remediation including developing risk-based standards for "how clean is clean," as well as the development of all permits for the terminal operations. This assignment included the direction of design, construction and start-up of a down-sized wastewater treatment plant and solids dewatering unit. Was communicator to media for a major oil spill and a major fire involving a surface impoundment and and an oil-water separator.

Responsible for environmental compliance, community outreach, employee EHS training, lobbying activities by the company related to facility operations, and the supervision of a staff of five environmental specialists. Led the development of the facility's first TRI report and community outreach associated with it, as well as the development of a permit application for a biotreatment-based closure of a RCRA surface impoundment. Served on a corporate refinery audit team. Developed and led refinery employee training on environmental responsibilities, hazard communication and asbestos. Served as emergency communicator for spill events and fires as part of the emergency response team.

Responsible for process enhancement design including energy conservation, flare gas recovery, the design of a process unit data system. Developed the refinery Hazard Communication program (compliance with 29 CFR 1910.1200).

Responsible for refinery key performance indicator (KPI) development and reporting. Developed the refinery's first spreadsheet-based yield model that could provide real-time answers instead of the next day results provided by the mainframe-based model used previously.

In response to the TACB's new regulation covering fugitive emissions, supervised a team that developed an isometric-drawing based leak tracking and repair system for refinery fugitive emission sources, led the performance of the first year of monitoring for the refinery, and developed a computerized leak history system.
