CPTED Alberta was created by its Founder and Director, John Beatson. He saw a need for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) after spending over three decades as a police officer. John realized that over his career, he was responding to calls from people in distress as crime was happening. Over the last ten years, he realized crime and disorder could be prevented or reduced significantly through CPTED. John is passionate about CPTED and wants to help people create safe and enjoyable places to live, work and play. He hopes to grow and evolve CPTED in Canada and eventually around the world, helping people achieve a better quality of life.Over his police career, John was an instructor at the Police College teaching Use of Force, defensive tactics and firearms qualification. He was a member of Emergency Task Force and received specialized training in rappelling, aircraft assault, hostage rescue, sniper training, crisis negotiation, close protection and explosive disposal. In 2011 John joined the Edmonton Police Service. He was on the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team, a multi-disciplinary team of social worker, youth worker and police officer. He co-created the Safer Parking Initiative to assess and enhance the safety of parking lots. He transitioned to the Crime Prevention Unit where he provided CPTED training, performed CPTED audits for City properties and areas affected by high crime and did quality control of audits. John helped facilitate the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program (CFMH). In November 2017 John became the EPS CPTED Coordinator and received additional training in the USA, taking the Basic and Advanced CPTED courses and Specialized Topics courses earning the CPTED Professional Designation (CPD) in April 2018.John taught Basic and Advanced CPTED courses to law enforcement, city planners, architects, private security, property managers and community members.
