I am a teacher at heart. I have spent my career helping students learn in varied settings: traditional classrooms, distance learning, video classes. My central focus is teaching Biblical Studies from an evangelical base, but I have also taught Greek, history, communications, administration and life skills. Crafting a curriculum that fits the situation and the students stands out as my trademark. I specialize in making the complex clear and building the first steps that will enable a student to move forward. Learning facts is worthwhile, but the real payoff comes when you can link those facts to life situations. What you know is less important than the person you become.President James Garfield once defined the ideal college education as "Mark Hopkins on one end of a log and a student on the other." Hopkins taught in the 1800s, but the same principle holds true today. Good education happens when the teacher and student interact. That happens in widely varied settings. I have taught young people in Austria, married couples in Arizona, and church groups in Japan. I have taught Greek to groups of 5 and spoken to audiences of 13,000. A daily radio program and many years of leading Bible study groups. Packaging curricula for others to teach is a rewarding part of my focus, whether it is a character curriculum for home schoolers or an online urban ministry program for a Bible college. My work in recent years has allowed me to learn several software platforms for education.Teachers are usually writers, and I am no exception. I love to take scholarly content and transform it into practical help for the non-specialists in the crowd. I have written a self-instructional workbook for New Testament Greek, a series of articles and word studies for The Complete Biblical Library, and the verse-by-verse commentary for the Proverbs volume in the Holman Bible Commentary, as well as a number of short articles.Life outside of my profession is enriched by my family, including 5 granchildren, miles of walking each week in nature, and my years of experience as a pianist/organist. God is good, and I am grateful.
