John has been involved in research and development in the biotechnology sector since 1999. His post-graduate research focused on biotechnology in agriculture and antimalarial drug discovery. In 2011, he was appointed Manager of the African Centre for Gene Technologies, a collaborative advanced biotechnology initiative of science councils and Universities. In this role, he has successfully initiated and secured funding for a number of strategic international endeavours, including: a Carnegie Corporation-funded Southern African Natural Products network, the Southern African-based European Union action GMASSURE, and the Southern African Beef Genomics Programme. More recently he was involved in a programme aimed at increasing yield and nutritional content of the African staple maize. John has been instrumental in initiating and growing a bespoke bioinformatics capacity building programme for national stakeholders, facilitated by world-leading advanced biotechnology experts. He retains a deep interest in research and development and strategic innovation.
