About John Beers

I'm sure I wasn't the first kid to become completely enthralled with security after watching Matthew Broderick hack the WOPR in WarGames, but I never thought that one day, that would just be a small part of my job description.I was beyond fortunate to travel the country, and the world, consulting for Mandiant during the APT Golden Age, responding to some of the biggest incidents on the planet. Doing forensics on a drive while the news runs a special on the incident was a surreal experience I will never forget. When I wasn't doing incident response, I had the opportunity to live my best WarGames life, performing every type of proactive security assessment we had to offer. Some days, there were covert internal penetration tests to gain complete control of massive enterprises. On lucky others, discovering zero-day vulnerabilities during vulnerability assessments. If that wasn't exciting enough, there was breaking into a research facility and donning a white lab coat to access a high-security laboratory for a physical security assessment -- just to name a few. After years of consulting I turned inward to focus on improving Mandiant's network detection capabilities, performing end-to-end security assessments of our next generation products, and improving intelligence on our biggest nation-state-sponsored adversaries. Following FireEye's acquisition of Mandiant in 2014, I moved to the newly created FireEye Labs Advanced Reverse Engineering (FLARE) Team to reverse engineer malware and leverage my exposure at Mandiant to conduct research to further improve detection.Since the time I enjoyed at Mandiant/FireEye, I've concentrated on using the skills, experience, and exposure that I accumulated to help those that need it. From volunteer work at small not-for-profit organizations helping struggling families, to organizations reeling from an attack in need of a trusted advisor at MOXFIVE, I'm excited to be able to dedicate my time working closely with others to make a real impact.

Listed skills include Penetration Testing, Computer Forensics, Vulnerability Assessment, Computer Security, and 11 others.
