Chief Geophysicist for Africa/Europe Region

Accountable for mine-site exploration at Siguiri Gold Mine (Guinea). Exploration involves both below pit and regional work.In addition to this also carry out role of regional geophysicist in the Africa region.

Mongbwalu, Drc

Responsible for Greenfields exploration at Mongbwalu (DRC). This included development of strategy, planning, budgeting, and delivery. Exploration was carried out within a license area of some 3500 km2, and involves multiple work teams (soil sampling, geophysics, augering and drilling) and a staff of some 180 people. Development of safety systems and implementation thereof was a key component of this role.

Responsible for all geophysics in the Sub-Sahara Africa region for AngloGold Ashanti. This region contributes some 70 % of AngloGold’s production, or approximately 3.3 Moz of gold. There were generally 3 – 5 ground crews active in the region and an airborne contractor. There was also a junior geophysicist who reported to me and specialist consultants. My accountabilities included safety, survey and contract design, and interpretation. Assumed management of remote sensing and associated staff in the region and form part of the senior management team for Greenfields exploration.Techniques used frequently were Induced Polarisation, ground magnetics, airborne magnetics and electromagnetic time domain surveys. Software skills include Oasis Montaj, ModelVision, PA, Erdas Imagine, ArcMap and GeoTomo.

My principal responsibility was the interpretation of airborne EM and magnetic surveys. Other tasks were airborne survey planning and management of airborne EM data processing. I was also involved in technical development (AeroTEM II and Mag Squid) and training of junior geophysicists.
