The military has an obligation to provide for the overall well-being of its Service members and their families, not only in peacetime, but especially during times of war or crisis. In peacetime, programs are designed to maintain mission readiness, promote fitness and esprit de corps, and create a strong sense of military community that enhances the quality of life. During conflict, high morale is critical for those personnel who are deployed, as well as for the families that remain behind. In order to withstand the physical and emotional stresses endured, particularly during deployment situations, the military community depends upon a strong support system. This system is comprised of programs designed to encourage positive individual values; aid in recruitment and retention of personnel; provide for physical, mental, cultural, and social needs, and the general well-being of Service members and their families; and establish a core sense of community for its transient population. Without providing these kinds of support services, including physical fitness facilities, libraries, youth and outdoor recreation activities, arts and crafts, and unit- level sports, the military would have difficulty accomplishing its basic missions. What They Do Recreation, welfare, and morale specialists in the military perform some or all of the following duties: ◾Plan, prepare, and direct social functions, meetings, or recreational activities◾Prepare daily activity reports◾Track inventory, purchasing, receiving, and storage of equipment and goods for club and entertainment services◾Direct operation of clubs, open messes, recreational buildings, and libraries◾Arrange publicity for social or recreational events, such as plays, concerts, and tournaments◾Issue and maintain recreation gear and resources, such as sports equipment and movies◾Conduct surveys to determine interests and attitudes of the military population and their dependents◾Schedule facility or property maintenance
