I often used to wonder how I ended up in the world of H&S. Joining the Royal Navy as a Warfare Specialist at the age of 16, and transitioning out into the H&S industry five years later, does, as career paths go seem a little at odds with one another.The more I thought about this, the more I realised just how many people I’ve met within the H&S industry that come from ex-military backgrounds, including the very person that recommended me for my first job. This got me thinking - why was this? I don’t mean why as in the similar skill sets that each profession requires - but why like me, so many ex-service personnel within the H&S industry share a genuine passion for what they do. Then it suddenly dawned on me. The reason why I joined the Royal Navy was to ultimately protect people, which translated into what I do now. It’s the exact same - keeping people safe and well. It’s that simple. I’m incredibly fortunate to have had careers to date that are so aligned to my values, which is why I love doing what I do.
