John Cauthen, CISSP, GCFA, GCFE, GSEC, CCME is an investigator with TEC Inquiries, Inc., a private investigation firm in Pinellas County which focuses on digital forensics and cyber investigations. He is a retired FBI agent and retired Naval Officer, retiring with the rank of Commander. As an former FBI Cyber Agent, he has a deep level of experience and understanding of cybercrime having investigated numerous computer intrusions, intellectual property, internet fraud and crimes against children cases.Since joining TEC Inquiries, Inc. in 2017, he has investigated cyber/computer security matters and provided expert witness services regarding digital evidence throughout the United States. His clients have included Fortune 100 companies, national insurance companies, as well as attorneys specializing in criminal defense, family law, and personal injury cases.He brings his experience from the FBI as a digital forensic examiner and the head of Tampa FBI’s Digital Forensic Laboratory, collecting data from computers, mobile devices and vehicles where he has examined thousands of pieces of digital evidence including cell phones and computers as well as other types of digital evidence. He has also been qualified and has testified as an expert in federal court on such matters. His experience has led to a variety of instructor roles involving analysis and testimony involving digital evidence. Some of these roles include serving as an instructor for FBI Computer Scientists in Quantico, VA where he taught them how to conduct digital examinations and then certified them to work on FBI cases. He was also a Professor/Instructor at the University of California – Davis teaching graduate students how to perform examinations of digital media and how to report their findings. Currently, he is a contract instructor for Cellebrite, company that manufactures devices for analysis of cellular phones and mobile devices.
