In 1980, It wasn't that difficult to teach myself how to program a computer. More difficult was knocking on doors until someone hired me at minimum wage. Within six months, I was making top money. A disagreement among the owners of the company left a breakup and clients to be served. I started my own company, and with the blessing of the erstwhile owners, I had clients. (It was just me to start, but when the money began rolling in, my tax guy said I needed to incorporate.) Other clients also came.Paramount Pictures -- and there may still be three lines of code in the belly of their beast called "the Chambers method to value negative inventory". American Benefit Plan Administrators -- and their method of determining eligibility for Taft-Hartley (labor union) plans was state-of-the art but I saw it could be better. ABPA gained a huge competitive edge and soon the rest of the industry was following what I had pioneered. But all this while, my passion was writing. I freelanced for an ad agency and for a PR firm, writing copy. Good money but I was not fond of the culture. About 1990, a local private school asked me to write a history book to counter the "liberal indoctrination" of usual texts. The kids asked me to teach about the Constitution. Over a number of years teaching the subject, I wrote a Study Guide which is still used by home-school kids and private schools across the country. No longer interested in keeping up with computer technology, I let my last client go a few months ago. Yes, I can still program applications for OpenVMS systems. But I've been writing copy for the Constitution Study Group (see above; see the videos etc.). And if you want to see the country on the right track, we should talk about copy you need too.
