Engineering Manager

Current

Engineering Manager for Ubuntu Engineering Server Distro Americas and other interests. Manage a bunch of great engineers that don't need me, learning how to be a distro maintainer. If something breaks, it's probably my fault. Do i affect more or less people now? Honestly, don't know...let's just leave it to "global reach with millions of users." If rabbitmq breaks, sorry."We are packaging devops" LV

Engineering Manager

Current

Engineering Manager on the Canonical Public Cloud team. Help lead engineering relationships with major cloud partners (the big 5, among other contracts). DM me with a guess at the size of contracts -- i won't confirm but it could be a fun game. Technical lead helping to oversee the direction of image building and delivery, as well as the many tools (open source and proprietary) CPC maintains. Re-architecting pipelines for faster and more reliable building, refactoring all the codebases one class at a time, and figuring out root cause of LP: 1960537. Also coordinate CVE and Ubuntu releases (CPC release lead for Impish and forthcoming Jammy). Manage people, manage projects, make epics, lead grooming. Wait, do I really do all this? Yeah...and sometimes I eat too. I also maintain an active Instagram account that's just me pulling shots of espresso on a Flair Signature manual espresso machine. Follow me @getchapullz . Yes this is an important part of being engineering manager.Helping to plan the slow takeover of the world, one image at a time.

Nov 2021 - Present

Software Engineer

Lead the engineering relationship with two major cloud partners. Create Ubuntu images for the clouds -- you're probably using something I had a hand in making right now. Work in the AWS marketplace, including automating the creation of new versions of software. Helped lead an engineering effort to redesign build pipeline, leading to a reduction of code, greater reusability, and much faster spin up time for new product pipelines.

Feb 2020 - Nov 2021

Senior Software Engineer

Kansas City, Mo

Senior Software Engineer in Akamai's Build and Release ecosystem, focusing on an in house continuous integration pipeline. Focusing on a restful API for queuing jobs into the message bus, a build dispatch engine polling the message bus, and extending the build engine written in Java.Previously worked as lead of integrating Java builds using Maven. Implemented Python libraries for configuration from multiple sources and for interacting with Artifactory's REST API. I've created Docker containers for the Maven builds using Akamai's tools. I've written a Python3 Click/CLI workspace provisioner with a plugin structure. This allows us to quickly get sources from different VCS and Artifact Repos, and extend quickly. I spearheaded an initiative to move build configuration to a file in repository, and did initial designs and mockups for the file, and its use in the build system. This file is now in use for configuring jobs in the CI pipeline. Also a Flask app integrating with a Cassandra like key:value store, a Hug app using SQLAlchemy and Postgresql, and countless scripts. Work has been in Java, Python, Postgres, MySQL, bash, Git, Perforce, Maven, Pip/Setuptools, Groovy, and more. And meetings. Lots of meetings. Ask me about my design and user documentation, and how i'm up over 300 pages since transferring. Might as well make it a book...

Oct 2017 - Jan 2020

Systems Software Engineer Ii

Kansas City, Mo

As a Systems Engineer II in Developer Productivity, I was technical lead for corporate wide adoption of Artifactory for universal artifact storage. This includes system architecture tasks, designing and coding Ansible installation scripts, designing retention schemes, and providing systems administration, build support, and application support. The system is multiple HA clusters, geographically distributed, with large NFS storage and external Postgresql databases. I've also worked extensively in Python, writing automation and CLIs for my immediate team. This includes a CLI done in Click for automating new user requests in Atlassian Bitbucket Server and ticketing in Atlassian Jira. In my spare time, I've been working on an Artifactory python class that I've successfully been using to retrieve and migrated information between geographic nodes.

Oct 2016 - Oct 2017

Release Engineer

Cambridge, Ma

As release engineer for the Luna organization at Akamai, coordinating network releases, and building, maintaining, and supporting a custom Jenkins based CI set-up. This included being Atlassian Stash administrator, Sonatype Nexus, Sonatype IQ Server, and standing up Black Duck Hub for P.O.C. I wrote a Python script to automate the release verification checks, including checking Atlassian Jira tickets, Atlassian Bitbucket pull requests and repository set-up, and proper sign-off. I also POC'ed a script for automating internal release notes using Atlassian Jira and Confluence, creating templated webpages using Djinja2 templating in Python.
