Synthesis and Modification of Drug Delivery Nanoparticles. Synthesis of novel upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) and the attachment of molecular switches and cages to the surface of the NPs. Demonstrated the first published release of a small molecule from the surface of an UCNP using low energy 980 nm light. Development of new designer ligands for the surface modification of nanoparticles.

Post-Synthetic Functionalization of Photonic Nanoparticles.Investigated methods of improving the optical properties of lead chalcogenide nanocrystals through the growth of core-shell structures. Developed post-synthetic methods to enable the use of hydrophobic nanoparticles as biolabels and in polymer-nanoparticle composite materials. Demonstrated that UCNPs can be employed as NIR-to-NIR biolabels thus reducing background luminescence and improving imaging depth.
