Proficient in microwave LOS, HF, VHF and UHF antenna system installation, maintenance, testing and fault resolution throughout the world. I was solely responsible for design, installation, commissioning and resource procurement for all network infrastructure including copper cable networks for both voice and data along with fibre optic installation, termination and testing.
Lead Mast Engineer
My third secondment from the RAF to work with a remote detachment within Antarctica. Based at Rothera research station on the Antarctic peninsula. Responsible for the inspection, maintenance and fault rectification on all of the antenna systems and associated masts. Systems include fixed HF communication systems, NDB and ground to air comms supporting the ATC tower, meteorological instruments and a rotatable HF LPH (Log Periodic Horizontal) antenna system. Along with the systems, there are also the associated feeder lines and catenaries, all of which are above ground and supported on masts requiring inspection and certification. Alongside the main tasks, any special projects that require a working at height specialist to complete. W@HPPE inspection and management along with delivering rescue at height refresher training to the full time BAS personnel who are trained to W@H.As with both other secondments, my time “South” working alongside BAS was an amazing experience and something that I would always consider doing again. It’s great to live and work with so many different specialists from dive officers to scientists and facilities engineers such as mechanics, electricians and plumbers to name a few. Working in a remote location, cut off from the world is nothing new to me from my experience in the RAF and previous secondments to Antarctica, however, each deployment enhances and builds on my experience and i believe that this makes me a better tradesman’s and manager.

Including the dismantling of the non-directional beacon (NDB) and the construction of a replacement mast/antenna. Mostly HF communications with some UHF and VHF ground to air antenna. All masts have vertical alignment with the use of a theodolite and guy tensions checked and adjusted. Due to the inhospitable environment the masts and antenna have a tough life, being serviced annually in the small window of the Antarctic summer.
