I was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, and grew up with more imaginary friends than real ones. I was dosed with Ritalin, had a mental breakdown, and two bleeding ulcers all by high school. But I had stories, voices that wanted out. I composed my first actual song at ten and was considered a child prodigy. But what’s incredible for a child is deemed ordinary for adults. As I grew, I had to do better and work harder to stay relevant. So I did. I have spent 48 years as a performer and writer. I learned audio recording at Caribou Ranch Studio in Nederland, Colorado, wrote and produced one of the first independent label CDs in the U.S.A., and have over 50 songs in the BMI catalog. I co-wrote a 12-hour radio play for NPR that was wiped away by Ronald Reagan during the defunding of the National Endowment for the Arts. I have done hundreds of live TV and radio appearances and published two novels. I was always on the edge but never quite over into where I wanted to be. Once, in the late 70s, I was taken out into the Ozark hills to see an old blind woman who said I would finally see my success on Broadway. I scoffed. I knew nothing of Broadway and had never been drawn to it. Now, all these years later, I have to wonder what destiny really means.I joined Ken Davinports Theatermakers studio during the lockdown and presented a full Zoom reading with a full score, and attracted Miss Hazel Jade to direct and help develop In The Tent of Stars. I got input from Ryan Scot Oliver and J.J. Maley, Michael J. Di Gaetano, and others. Development is a slow boat, but it’s moving. My grandfather traveled in Vaudeville in 1917-18, before WWI changed the trajectory of his life. He always wondered, what if? I feel it’s time to find that answer for us both. Now I’m older than he ever got to be, an asexual man with a “one of each” LGBTQ+ diverse family. I have dined with the aristocracy and eaten from dumpsters. I stood before thousands of cheering festival goers and sang to a single dying coal miner in a Welsh hospital as he, in turn, sang with his ghosts. Most of all, I have learned to trust chaos. I have learned that going to pieces doesn’t mean falling apart. It means being able to salvage the good that remains and build again. That’s who I am.
