John E Crouch - BY THE NUMBERSONE - My word is my bond, and my integrity is not for sale!TWO - Being a mentor to others and celebrating their advancement and achievements brings me more joy than any personal recognition I have ever received. THREE - It is humbling to learn that people want to work with you. One employee sold his house and moved his family of five 660 miles to continue working with me. After eight years of mentoring him, he took my job as the Director of Engineering when I once again moved for another promotion. I have been told by several people over the years that they would love to work for me. Presently there are three waiting for that next opportunity, one of which has never worked for me.FOUR – I don’t commit intellectual theft. When an employee has a good idea that requires approval above my level, I push their suggestion up the chain of command, mentioning whose idea it was and I CC them in the email. FIVE - I try to be humble. Many times, throughout my career, I have asked those who work for me their opinion on a process, technology, theory of operation, etc. You earn respect when you ask those on your team their opinion or thoughts. I do not know it all.SIX - I am quick to interrupt meetings. I will ask questions if I am unsure of a process, how technology works, or the definition of something that was said, often something of a medical nature. This shows I am engaged and care about the discussion. It also shows I have courage to disclose that I have room to grow. To fake it till you make it is foolish in my opinion, that’s how you become a casual observer of a meeting you were expected to participate in, but you contributed nothing and learned nothing by pretending to follow the meeting.SEVEN - I promise I will surprise you and exceed your expectations. Whatever labels you may want to affix to my persona before we work together will not work for you. Hollywood creates colorful characters for the storyline, but those characters often would not make for a successful career in the military. Veterans are disciplined, courageous employees, thriving to be on a team who fully understand commitment, accountability and mission accomplishment. EIGHT – I bet I am the first to say hello whether it is the first time we pass each other in the hallways or the hundredth time.SO HOW CAN I HELP YOU, MY FRIEND?
