Data Innovations LLC leads the industry with connection and monitoring of medical diagnostic instrument interfaces for control and reporting. I designed, wrote and tested drivers for Abbott Laboratories, Sunquest 9, and several other companies according to manufacturer specification. Given the medical device classification of these instruments, the testing and driver documentation had to pass strict FDA standards. I wrote or updated drivers using HL7, IHE, XML and various custom record formats.

I was dedicated to the Laboratory system at Brigham and Women's hospital in many different roles. I was part of the on-call rotation as required to provide the lab with 24/7/365 coverage. I also modified and enhanced several modules of the LIS system including billing. I was involved with several vendor interfaces and converted interfaces from non-standard formats to HL7 and eventually Ensemble. I was also responsible for enhancement and support of the Test Ordering System used by clinics for off site orders.

As a contract programmer I spent a great deal of time on client sites working to enhance and customize the entire suite of IDX applications. I gained a great deal of experience with vastly different areas of healthcare information systems including claims adjudication, premium billing, enrollment reports, scheduling application enhancements, and printing labels. I also the sole programmer on an IDX MCA interface with the CarePlanner application from a referral systems vendor.

The Contract Programming group at IDX was an extension of the Support Department that would handle client requests for customizing on any of the IDX applications available to the client. It was a very visible position due to extensive client interactions at all levels from the data entry level up to department and organization management and involved customized or completely new screens, claims, reports, and just about any change to any of the IDX applications including managed care, scheduling, billing and receiving, and real time HL7 or custom interfaces.

As a development programmer my job was to turn specifications created by application analysts created using customer focus groups. The application was essentially re-written during this time to accommodate functionality that included a extensive order entry functionality, a specimen routing module, and a more user friendly label design/setup module. I was also the sole programmer for IDXLab integration with other IDX applications such as the Order Entry module, (IDXLab ordered tests within the IDXLab application but the Order module was used to order labs and anything else like medications or even a bandaid), and bi-directional interfaces. I was also on site for go lives at two different sites as the product was in the beta stage and had not yet been handed over to the support department. And when it was handed over I wrote several hundred pages of documentation for the IDXLab order entry module.
