Work Philosophy: I guess I could have retired several years ago, and sat at home drinking 12-year old, un-blended scotch, while reading great novels. Nothing against novels. They teach good lessons. Nothing against a nice scotch either. But, I chose to continue working, so that I could pass along ideas to people who continue to believe the American Dream is still achievable.When I was young, the American Dream was more easily defined and achieved than today. It used to be viewed as: “I own a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home, a car, and have access to enough resources to put my children through college. Maybe I can retire at 60.” Then, it became "he who dies with the most toys wins!”Now, it’s defined as “I need to accumulate enough solid wealth to recover from the last recession and to prepare for the next one. Can I shelter my family by working harder and smarter?”Over 40% of the U.S. workforce is classified as “contingent” (contract, part-time, on-call, etc.), with a significant portion of those workers being classified as under-employed (working two jobs minimum and/or not paid well although educated or trained). Growth of the national debts, coupled with rapid changes in technology, will create an even bleaker employment outlook for those persons we used to call “the middle class.” Frustrating? Yeah. Scary? Definitely. So, I guess we have a few choices. We can work harder for “the man, or company.” We can occasionally talk about our favorite fiction authors, or the best scotch we ever had. Or, we can decide that the American Dream is still achievable, although it is more difficult than a generation ago. Cheers!
