Having worked as both a ranger and lodge manager in some of Africa’s most remote regions, JD decided it was time to return home and took up a position at Singita Sabi Sands, South Africa towards the end of 2009. By the onset of 2011, having satiated his desire to track, view and photograph leopards, he began to entertain thoughts of city-life. Having spent over eight years working across Africa for some of the continents leading eco-tourism companies, it was time to head back to civilization. The decision made, JD returned to Cape Town, where he introduces guests to Africa’s most historic and beautiful city. On his arrival in the Cape, JD embarked upon acquiring cultural guiding qualifications and began guiding for Wilderness Touring on a freelance basis whilst simultaneously completing a degree in Finance. Over two years were spent guiding Wilderness Touring guests across the Cape and along the Garden Route. Over this period JD became well versed in a multitude of topics from the intricacies of wine production to the cuisine at the cities top restaurants.My current role with Wilderness Touring is that of Product Manager and covers a variety of key functional areas. I am responsible for all aspects pertaining to our guides and guiding standards (interviewing, managing existing guides and recruitment) in order to attract and retain the finest guides in Cape Town and ensure the best possible guest experience.I oversee operations at our vehicle depot (processes and procedures) to ensure the smooth day-to-day collection and delivery of vehicles and to maintain the highest standards relating to our fleet (acquisition, maintenance, cleanliness).I am responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with all of our agents and dealing with any guest concerns/complaints as and when they arise. Additionally, I fulfil various financial functions within the office environment.
