John Danielson is an accomplished nationally and internationally respected executive who believed early in his 30-year career that the private sector, working closely with public entities, had an important role to play in the creation of improved education systems and technologies for all children. John's career has spanned service to two US Presidents and three US Secretaries of Education. He co-founded two successful companies, served as a CEO and C-suite executive, chief of staff to a major federal cabinet agency responsible for 4,500 employees, chairman of a significant education company with revenue in excess of $1.5 BB, 17,000 employees and over 65,000 students, and as an active board member to corporate and non-profit entities. His work has taken him to every corner of the United States, the Middle East, Latin America, Europe and Asia advising presidents, governors, mayors, civil rights leaders, a-list entertainers, major private equity funds and global corporate CEOs. John's lifelong passions are children, American history, books and the belief that education is a vital diplomatic channel that can make a lasting difference toward improving our world. John’s national education experience began when he served in several different senior roles for former United States Secretary of Education and current United States Senator Lamar Alexander (1990-1995). He was appointed Chief of Staff at the United States Department of Education by President George W. Bush in 2001 and earned a reputation for his ability to adapt innovative business strategies and tactics to resolve issues faced by the public education sector as well as playing a lead role in expanding the Department's international profile. He later returned to help U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan by serving as a peer reviewer in all four of the landmark Race to the Top state and district competitions.

Board MemberStandardswork Jan 2010 - PresentTwenty-five years ago, following release of A Nation at Risk, Governors from across the country concluded that we needed to raise our academic standards. Lamar Alexander (TN) and Bill Clinton (AR) led the charge. StandardsWork was an early leader in the standards movement – and we’ve dedicated ourselves to working for a better standard of practice ever since. For many years, we focused on the quality and rigor of standards (what students should know and be able to do); over time we moved to how states, districts, schools, and teachers could better implement them. The work included advocating for practices we believed were central to improving teaching and learning, including data analysis to identify who was learning (and not) and the importance of a knowledge-rich curriculum for all kids. We always promoted “best-practices” – what we now call “proven practices” because they’re bolstered by research to validate what works. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) opens a new era, where states will again be challenged to harness all we’ve learned about what it takes to improve teaching and learning. We know that more research will be imperative, but also that there is enormous energy and good work in the field that deserves recognition and adoption.

Board Of DirectorsAfterschool Alliance Jun 2017 - PresentWashington, Dc, UsThe Afterschool Alliance was established in 2000 by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, J.C. Penney Company, Inc., the Open Society Institute/The After-School Corporation, the Entertainment Industry Foundation and the Creative Artists Agency Foundation. The Afterschool Alliance grew from public awareness efforts undertaken by the Mott Foundation through an unprecedented, public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Education to expand afterschool programs through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers afterschool program. The federal government provided grants to local communities for afterschool programs, while the Mott Foundation funded training, evaluation and public awareness activities. The Foundation and the Department's efforts caught the attention of several outside entities with a shared interest in achieving afterschool for all. These groups came together in September 1999 to create the Afterschool Alliance.Today, the Alliance works with a broad range of organizations and supporters, including policymakers and policymaker associations, advocacy groups, afterschool coalitions and providers at every level, business and philanthropic leaders, technical assistance organizations and leaders representing a variety of interests, each with a stake in afterschool. -
