My journalism career began with four years at United Press International (Indianapolis and Los Angeles) and 31 years with the Los Angeles Times. I retired in 2014 after 14 years as news editor and writer with the Chicago-based Christian Century biweekly magazine -- a job that allowed me to work mostly out of my Los Angeles area home. This years (2015) I am working on a new book and have applied for a grant with the National Endowment for the Humanities for support for this endeavor. It's hard to quit this profession-- Had humor items published by the White Plains, N.Y., newspaper, and wrote a humor column for my high school paper, then one for an Army base magazine in northern Japan. Got into reporting religion when that was the only news beat open at the L.A. Tijmes. After taking a buyout in 1998, I was a media consultant in 1999 for the Parliament of the World's Religions which that year in Cape Town, South Africa. My specialties in religion news are media issues and writing books for about Christian apocryphal texts and writing about biblical research for popular consumption.
