Great Bear Sea Program Manager

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Oct 2020 - Jul 2022

Ph.D. Student

Vancouver, Canada

My Ph.D. research focused on the assessment and management of fisheries for nutrient yield outcomes.

Sep 2014 - Oct 2020

Fisheries Data Analyst And Technical Report Writer

Independent

In this position, I analyzed data and summarized results in technical reports in order to make recommendations regarding the relative sustainability of fisheries.

Apr 2012 - Oct 2018

Sustainable Fisheries Campaign Manager

In this position, I was responsible for the development and implementation of science-based advocacy efforts, with the goal being to effect change in Pacific region fishing practices via government, public, and industry action. While working in this capacity, I co-negotiated a conservation award-winning agreement between environmental groups and the British Columbia groundfish bottom trawl fishery. Conditions of this agreement included the implementation of a suite of changes to the management of the fishery. These management changes resulted in: • 21% reduction in the fishery’s overall footprint• 65% reduction in the fishery’s footprint in sensitive, deep-water habitats• Implementation of a protocol to alert government and the trawl fleet when a significant catch of coral or sponge occurs• Mandatory fleet-wide and individual vessel limits (i.e., quotas) for coral and sponge bycatch. This is believed to be the world’s first use of individual vessel limits to reduce and manage the habitat impacts of a fishery. In addition to this effort, I also represented environmental interests in numerous meetings, attended and presented information at national-level science advisory meetings, engaged in the development of organizational and coalition-level strategies, and developed the organization's blog from its first post to a point at which it was receiving over 3,000 hits/month.
