This is a committee within the IUCN/SSC that focuses and advises on plant conservation issues

As head of the Biodiversity Research, Assessment and Monitoring Division of SANBI, I lead a team of ~90 scientists focusing on biodiversity assessments (terrestrial, freshwater and marine) and the development of knowledge and evidence to guide policy and decision making. The team works on priority issues for the biodiversity sector in South Africa such as biological invasions, climate change, wildlife trade, land degradation, and ecological infrastructure. We apply different modalities for research, from undertaking in depth studies to coordinating and convening research networks and synthesizing knowledge to aid decision making.

This was an ad hoc position as Chair of a national committee responsible for scientific oversight of trade in CITES listed plant and animal species. I was the first Chair for this committee, established in 2008, and in this role developed the working procedures, established a technical support unit and secretariat, and helped strengthen the capacity for non-detriment findings and scientific assessment of wildlife trade impacts
