I’m a digital designer and photographer. I help people and organizations hone their message, and create an engaging presence on the web, in print and in the real world. I also work with organizations and the public to create dialogues about the environment.I create websites, graphic design, interface design, video and photography, interactive maps, social media planning and print collateral. I expand social media into public engagement campaigns. I help clients sort what they want from what they need, and and which technologies will most help them. I can also assist in thinking about the needs of the people they want to engage, and look at what colleagues and competitors might be doing well that can be instructive.Creatively, I have been a photographer for most of my life, and am currently creating large composites of street portraits for whole-environment landscapes, many with long-exposures revealing how we look in a wider envelope of time. With this technique, colours blend and people blur, revealing a landscape we walk through every day but never actually see. Some think design is simply about how something looks, and certainly that’s important. Digital design includes selecting and integrating a wide range of technologies to support the central message and purpose of the project. Design is also about how people can most easily grasp your message, find what they want, and use the features you provide with as little figuring out as possible. A large part of my work supports initiatives to preserve the spectacular natural environment in BC., both in advocacy such as DefendIslandForests.ca, and conservation development such as the Grafton Lake Lands (graftonlake.ca) project. I work promoting heritage as well, with the BowenTrails.ca website and its virtual heritage trail. These all involve a significant public engagement process. As one of the founders of the startup Ethelo, I helped design the interface for the online, enterprise-level decision-making tool that allows large groups to find the 'sweet spot' of closest alignment and strongest planning choices (ethelo.com). Invented by mathematician/lawyer John Richardson, it serves government and private organizations. The social enterprise wing (ethelo.org) helps non-profits and other public groups discuss the issues of the day.I very much enjoy helping people understand, create and grow. I often work one on one with people pursuing their dreams.
