About John E. Williams

The recipient of an Edward Albee Foundation Fellowship (1989), TCG Affiliated Writers Fellowship (1995) and Eugene O'Neill National Theatre Critics Fellowship (2000). writer-critic-scholar John E. Williams has written essays, articles and reviews about Third World media aesthetics, performance studies, queer theory, black feminist theory, transnational studies and the literatures and media of Africa and the black diaspora for Afterimage, Discourse, Motion Picture, The Independent, A Critique of America, Critical Social Issues, the African American Review and The Black Scholar. His first story was published in the California Voice--the oldest black newspaper on the West coast-- owned by the late Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett. He was also responsible for reprinting Huey P. Newton's revolutionary analysis of Melvin Van Peebles's (1932-2021) classic film "Sweet, Sweetback's Baadassss Song" (1971) which originally appeared in the Black Panther Party News and was recently inducted into the Library of Congress's National Film Registry. Currently, he is working on a book about pioneer actor-director-playwright-filmmaker Bill Gunn (1929-1989), black woman filmmaker Kathy Collins (1942-1988) and actor-producer Duane Jones (1937-1988).
