Undergraduate Research Assistant
Developed MATLAB algorithms that converted brain activity from patients with locked-in syndrome (i.e. ALS patients, stroke victims, etc.) into digital outputs (i.e. moving a computer mouse/cursor) via Brain Computer Interfaces. The intent of this project was to create a foundation for unlocking a medium of communication between the brain of patients with locked-in syndrome and the outside world.Modified existing neural mapping methods that used a feedback loop between the input of the brain and the output of the cursor velocity, contributing new and improved regression and computational methods.Applied the resulting algorithm to simulated and real locked-in syndrome patients and compared the results against those of existing neural mapping methods.RESULTS: The resulting algorithm proved to have higher variability in overall stability with real patients than existing neural mapping methods. However, the processing speed and noise in the output signal was improved, which resulted in improved overall stability with simulated patients.
