Consultant in Thoracic Surgery & Major Trauma in Sheffield, covering 1.8m in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire. I am an enthusiast for Single Port VATS in all forms of thoracic surgery & as my routine approach for anatomical lung resection. Clinical interests include all forms of surgery for lung cancer & mesothelioma, thoracic trauma, chest wall tumours and pectus deformities (Nuss, Ravitch, Elastic Stable Repair), costal cartilage injuries, slipping syndrome, endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.I have a particular interest in the Chest Wall, with a dedicated Chest Wall clinic receiving referrals from across the country. I have assisted in the development of a number of diagnostic radiological techniques, in conjunction with our MSK radiologists, and have evolved effective surgical techniques for repair of Costal Margin Rupture.I have 15 years of medicolegal experience preparing reports regarding malignant mesothelioma, benign asbestos related diseases (such as diffuse pleural thickening). I have extensive experience in the assessment of clients suffering personal injury and thoracic trauma, in addition to clinical negligence related to the practice of thoracic surgery and lung cancer in management in general.With my Sheffield colleagues, we led the UK introduction of plate/screw fixation of rib fractures. I was supported by the Sheffield Clinical Research Academy in collaborations with UK and international colleagues to refine indications for & techniques of surgical fixation within the Sheffield Multiple Rib Fractures Study. I am in demand as faculty for thoracic trauma educational courses & product development consultation worldwide. I have particular interests in the taxonomy of blunt chest wall injury, leading the Chest Wall Injury Society taxonomy project, including rib, sternal and costal cartilage fractures. Funded research interests, supported by Yorkshire Cancer Research and multiple grants, include quality of life in patients with early stage lung cancer, chest wall pain, empyema and single port VATS resections. I have published many articles related to mesothelioma, lung cancer, trauma and thoracic surgery in general. I am a regular speaker at conferences worldwide.I am past chair of the British Thoracic Oncology Group Charity Board of Trustees.
