John has been an advisor to boards and senior executives on accountability, organisational structure, governance and remuneration issues for over three decades, having assisted more than 80% of Australia's top 200 companies as well as a myriad of entrepreneurial organisations and Government entities across a wide range of industries over his career. John's early career was with Cullen Egan Dell, a company of which he was Chairman from 1983 to 1989. Egan Associates, which he founded in 1989, provides advice on organisational issues arising from transformation initiatives, specialist staff and key management personnel remuneration, including CEOs and Non-Executive Directors, as well as Board governance and effectiveness. Egan Associates advises on the design and level of executive reward across all industries, working with both corporate entities and government. The work often involves highly sensitive stakeholder concerns, ranging from providing advice on the pay of Parliamentarians to assisting major corporations in avoiding a strike against their remuneration report. John began a close and continuing association with the University of Sydney when he joined the Advisory Board of the Faculty of Economics in 1995. He served as Chair of the Board from early 2001 until stepping down at the end of 2010. John was appointed an Adjunct Professor in the faculty in 2003, that appointment ceasing in 2019. John was appointed an Honourary Fellow of the University of Sydney in May 2009.Prior to joining the Faculty’s Advisory Board, John served as Chair of the National Advisory Board of AISEC, the leading international student organisation fostering the development of campus entrepreneurship.He also pursues several other interests in ICT and biotechnology as well as horticulture. John was a Trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust and has restored a significant cold climate garden in NSW's Blue Mountains – an undertaking spanning 15 years.
