John Fleig started in the boiler business when he was 15, repairing and cleaning boilers with his uncle. "I always got stuck punching the tubes," or cleaning the pipes, he said, adding that it was a job as dirty as being a chimney sweep. At the end of the day, his mother wouldn't let him into the house because he was covered with so much soot--first, he had to "stay outside, and just grunge off," Fleig said. Originally he had planned to be a boiler tech but soon found out he was more interested in the water treatment side. Fleig joined the family business shortly after he finished high school, and his father gave him pretty much a free hand in running the company. The company back then was originally called J and G Chemical and were a Dearborn Aqua-Serv Distributor. The younger Fleig renamed the company Chemenergy (Chemicals for Energy management) in 1983, with the idea of providing a stronger identity for the business. Four years later, he bought the business from his father and uncle and began building a list of clients in communities within an hour's drive of Albany. Along the way John let innovation fuel the company's growth. Branching out and starting to sell softeners to lower boiler water treatment consumption helped clients save money. This was only the beginning. John also developed automatic direct from the drum feeders. Then the bug to be different and innovative kept hounding John
